SEO for Tradesmen

Get Found Locally and Win More Jobs

VKNG Digital gets tradespeople found. Plumbers, electricians, roofers, builders, landscapers, cleaners and security installers. When someone in your area needs what you do, they pull out their phone and search, and they call one of the first three results they see. If that is not you, you never hear about the job. We get you into those three results and keep you there, so the work comes to you instead of you buying it from a lead site.

The difference matters: a lead you pay for is shared with your competitors and gone once it is used, and it stops the day you stop paying. Visibility you build is yours, and it keeps working.

Stop Renting Your Leads and Start Owning Your Visibility

Every trade business we speak to is doing some version of the same thing: paying Checkatrade, MyBuilder, Rated People or Bark for leads, competing on price with four other people who bought the same lead, and wondering why the margin is not there. Those platforms work, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. But you are renting access to your own customers, the price goes up when they decide it goes up, and the day you stop paying you go back to nothing.

Organic search works the other way round. It takes longer to build, and it costs money before it makes money. But the visibility belongs to you, the cost per job falls as it grows rather than rising, and it keeps working on the months when you have not spent anything. VKNG Digital builds that visibility for trade businesses: Google Business Profile done properly, service and area pages that actually rank, reviews and photos working as ranking signals, and reporting in the only terms that matter, which is how many jobs you got and what each one cost you.

Digital Dominance Delivered: VKNG Digital

We are not a generalist agency applying corporate tactics to a trade business. We know the difference between an emergency call-out and a planned job, and that they need completely different things from a website. We know that most trade businesses are service area businesses with no shopfront, and that getting that wrong in Google Business Profile is the single most common reason a good local business is invisible. And we know that you have probably been sold SEO before by someone who charged you for six months and showed you a graph of impressions. We report on jobs.

Google Business Profile and the Map Pack

The Three Results That Get the Call

For trades, the map pack is the whole game. Most people searching for a plumber or an electrician call one of the top three map results and never scroll to the ordinary listings underneath. Getting into that box is worth more than everything else on this page combined, and it is where we start with every trade client.

Service Area Setup, Done Right

Most trade businesses have no shop or office a customer would visit, which makes you a service area business in Google’s terms. Setting that up wrong, or leaving a home address showing, or listing a service area that covers half the county, are three of the most common reasons a genuinely good local business does not appear. This is usually the first thing we fix and it is often the fastest win available.

Categories, Services and Attributes

Your primary category has more influence on what you rank for than almost anything else, and most profiles have the wrong one. We set the primary and secondary categories properly, list every service you actually offer, and keep the profile active with posts and photos, because a profile that has not been touched in a year ranks like one.

Reviews, Questions and Photos

Google reads your reviews, how recent they are, and whether you reply. It reads the questions people ask and whether anyone answered. It reads your photos. All three feed your position in the map pack and all three are usually neglected. We put a process around them so they keep working rather than being done once.

Service and Area Pages That Do Not Get Filtered

One Page Per Thing You Actually Do

Boiler installation, bathroom fitting, emergency repairs, rewiring, EICR certificates, flat roofing. Each service someone searches for separately needs its own page, written properly, covering what is involved, roughly what it costs, how long it takes and what happens first. Most trade websites have one Services page listing eight things in a bulleted list, which ranks for none of them.

Area Pages, and the Honest Warning About Them

Area pages work in this sector. They are also the single most abused tactic in it, and Google has specific guidance about doorway pages aimed at exactly this pattern: dozens of near-identical pages with the town name swapped, built to catch searches rather than to help anyone. Those get filtered out or ignored, and at worst they drag the rest of the site down. We build area pages for the places you genuinely work, each with real content about that area, real jobs you have done there, and real reasons a customer there should call you. Ten of those beat a hundred of the other kind, and we will tell you plainly when what you are asking for is the other kind.

Service and Area Combined, Where It Is Earned

“Emergency plumber Preston” is a real search with real intent, and this is the one sector in our whole client base where combining a service with a town produces a page worth building. We do it for the combinations that have actual demand and where you actually work, not as a template applied across a spreadsheet.

Pricing and Cost Content

“How much does it cost to rewire a house”, “boiler replacement cost”. These are searched constantly, they come from people who are about to spend money, and almost no trade business writes about them because the honest answer is “it depends”. Explaining what it depends on wins the search, filters out the people who were only ever going to want the cheapest quote, and starts the conversation with the ones who are serious.

Emergency and Planned Work

Two Completely Different Customers

An emergency call-out and a planned bathroom refit are not the same job and they are not the same search. Emergency is decided in about ninety seconds, on a phone, usually by whoever answers first. Planned work is researched over weeks, with photos compared, quotes gathered and a partner consulted. A website built for one is bad at the other.

Built for the Emergency Search

Phone number visible without scrolling, tap to call working properly, page loading fast on mobile data, hours and availability obvious, and the area you cover stated plainly. If someone has a leak, every extra second and every extra tap is a call going to whoever made it easier.

Built for the Planned Job

Photo galleries of finished work, clear explanation of the process and timescales, guidance on what to expect and what to budget, reviews from people who had the same job done. Planned work is won on confidence, and confidence is built by showing rather than claiming.

Seasonal Demand

Boiler work spikes with the first cold snap. Roofing follows storms. Landscaping runs through spring and summer. Drainage peaks with heavy rain. We plan content and activity around your actual demand curve, so you are visible before the season rather than trying to catch up during it.

Reviews, Photos and Trust

Reviews as a Ranking Signal

Reviews are not just reassurance for the customer. Volume, how recent they are and whether you respond all feed directly into where you appear in the map pack. A business with forty reviews from three years ago is beaten by one with fifteen from the last six months. We build a routine for asking that fits round how you actually work, rather than a system nobody uses.

Job Photos, Properly Used

Every trade business has a phone full of finished-work photos and almost none of them are on the website in a way that helps. Named, captioned, compressed, tied to the service and the area, and added to Google Business Profile regularly. This is free ranking material you already own.

Accreditations and Memberships

Gas Safe, NICEIC, NAPIT, FENSA, TrustMark, Which? Trusted Traders and manufacturer approvals. These matter to customers deciding whether to trust you and they carry links and citations. Most trade sites mention them in the footer and never link the registration.

Making Your Aggregator Profiles Work For You

If you are on Checkatrade, MyBuilder or TrustATrader anyway, those profiles carry links and get searched by name. We make sure they are complete, consistent with your other listings, and pointing back at you properly, so the money you are already spending does something for your own visibility too.

Costing Less Per Job Than the Lead Sites

The Number That Actually Matters

You already know your cost per lead, because a lead site sends you an invoice that makes it obvious. That is the number we work against. Not rankings, not traffic, not impressions. What did a job cost to win, and how does that compare to what you are paying now.

Leads You Own Versus Leads You Rent

A lead from a platform is sold to several people and gone once used. A customer who found you in the map pack is yours, along with their neighbour who asks them for a recommendation next year. The second kind compounds. That is the entire argument for doing this, and it is worth being clear that it is a slower argument as well as a better one.

Reducing Dependence, Not Necessarily Ending It

We are not going to tell you to cancel Checkatrade on day one. Organic takes months to build and you have a business to run in the meantime. The sensible path is to build your own visibility while the platforms keep the diary full, then reduce what you spend there as your own leads increase. Most clients get to a point where the platforms are a top-up rather than the main source.

Tracking Where Calls Actually Come From

Most trade businesses genuinely do not know which of their leads came from where, which makes it impossible to judge whether anything is working. We put call tracking and simple attribution in place at the start, so within a few months you have real numbers instead of an impression.

Measurement in Jobs, Not Rankings

Calls, Enquiries and Booked Work

We track calls and form enquiries by service and by area, then through to booked jobs where your systems allow it. That tells you which services and which areas are actually producing work, which is usually not what people expect.

Cost Per Job Won

The whole programme measured against what each won job cost to generate, compared against your current cost per lead from the platforms. If that comparison is not moving in the right direction, something needs to change and we would rather say so than show you a traffic graph.

Which Areas Are Worth Covering

Some of the towns you cover produce good work and some produce price shoppers and long drives. Once there is a few months of data, that becomes visible, and the SEO effort and your van time can both be pointed at the places worth being in.

Plain Monthly Reporting

One page. What we did, what it produced, what it cost per job, what we are doing next. If you want the detailed data it is there, but the report should be readable in the van in five minutes.

VKNG Digital Trades SEO Process

Local Audit and Baseline

Check where you currently appear in the map pack across the areas you cover, audit the Google Business Profile setup including the service area configuration, review the website for speed and mobile usability, look at your review position against local competitors, and establish what you are currently paying per lead so there is a number to beat.

Profile, Site and Area Planning

Fix the Google Business Profile properly. Map the services and areas that have real demand and where you genuinely work. Plan the pages worth building and say plainly which ones are not worth building.

Build and Get Visible

Fix the technical and mobile issues, build the service and area pages, get photos and accreditations in place, start the review routine, complete directory and citation listings, and set up call tracking so the results are measurable from day one.

Grow and Reduce Lead Spend

Track calls and jobs by service and area, expand into the areas that are producing good work, and start reducing what you spend on lead platforms as your own visibility takes over.

Digital Dominance Delivered

The VKNG Digital Difference

We Know Trades, Not Just Local SEO

We know the difference between an emergency call and a planned job, why service area setup matters more for you than for a shop, how seasonal demand moves in each trade, and which accreditations customers actually look for. Generic local SEO applied to a trade business misses most of what decides whether the phone rings.

We Measure in Jobs, Against What You Pay Now

You already know your cost per lead because a platform invoices you for it. That is the benchmark we work to. Not rankings, not traffic. If the cost per job is not moving in the right direction, we will tell you rather than showing you a chart that goes up.

We Will Not Build You Two Hundred Doorway Pages

Plenty of agencies will sell a trade business a page for every town within fifty miles. Google has explicit guidance about that pattern and it does not end well. We build area pages for the places you genuinely work, with real content and real jobs behind them, and we will say no to the rest.

Plain English

No acronyms without explaining them, no jargon, and a monthly report you can read in five minutes in the van. If you cannot tell from our reporting whether we are earning our fee, we are not doing our job properly.

Built for the Size You Actually Are

A one-van business and a twenty-van business need different things, and the twenty-van version sold to a sole trader is how people end up paying for work that could never pay for itself. We will tell you honestly if the numbers do not stack up for your size yet, and what would need to change for them to.

You ask, we answer

When someone needs a plumber, an electrician or a roofer, they search on their phone and they call one of the first few results. They do not scroll far and they do not compare six options. If you are not in that top group for your area, the job goes to someone who is, and you never know it existed. That is happening every day, in every town you cover.

Most trade businesses fill the gap by paying for leads. That works, but it is expensive, the leads are shared, and it stops the moment you stop paying. Building your own visibility takes longer and costs less over time, and it keeps working. We do that for trade businesses across Lancashire, including Preston, Blackburn, Burnley, Blackpool and Lancaster, and for trades nationwide.

Google Business Profile work is usually the fastest thing in SEO anywhere, and in this sector it is often the biggest lever too. If your profile is set up wrong, and a lot are, fixing it can change your map pack position within weeks. Website and area page work takes longer, normally three to four months before it shows properly, and competitive areas take longer still. Anyone promising you page one in a fortnight is either lying or talking about ads.

It depends on how many services and areas you need to cover and what state the website is in. We have worked with trade businesses investing from £500 per month upward. The useful way to think about it is against what you already pay for leads: if you are spending several hundred a month on platforms and getting shared leads for it, the comparison is straightforward. If you are not spending anything on marketing at all, the honest answer is that this is a real investment and it takes months to pay back.

Different rather than better, and it depends on your timescale. Platforms give you leads now, which is genuinely useful, but the leads are shared with competitors, the price is set by them, and it all stops when you stop paying. SEO takes months to build and then costs less per job and keeps working. The sensible approach for most businesses is both: keep the platforms running while your own visibility builds, then reduce what you spend there as your own calls increase. We are not going to tell you to cancel everything on day one.

A good question, and honestly the profile does a lot of the work in this sector. For a sole trader doing emergency call-outs in one town, a well-run profile with strong reviews will get you a long way on its own. But the profile alone caps out. It does not rank for the service searches people run when they are planning a bigger job, it gives you nowhere to show your work properly, and Google itself uses your website as a signal when deciding how to rank the profile. If budget is tight, fix the profile first. But the two work together, and the businesses doing best have both.

No, and this is the most common bad advice in this sector. Building dozens of near-identical pages with the town name swapped is exactly the pattern Google’s doorway page guidance targets. Those pages get ignored at best and can drag the rest of the site down at worst. What works is a smaller number of genuine area pages for the places you actually work, each with real content, real jobs you have done there and real local detail. Ten of those beat a hundred of the other kind, and we will tell you when what you are asking for is the other kind.

Sometimes yes and sometimes no, and we would rather say so upfront. If your work is high value, boiler installations, rewires, roofing, then a handful of extra jobs a month covers the cost comfortably and it is worth doing. If your jobs are low value and you are already busy, your money may be better spent elsewhere for now. Where it almost always makes sense for a sole trader is the Google Business Profile work, which is cheap relative to the return. We will look at your numbers and tell you which of those you are.

Very, and in two ways at once. Customers read them before calling, which you already know. But Google also uses how many you have, how recent they are and whether you reply when deciding where you appear in the map pack, which most people do not know. A business with forty reviews from three years ago gets beaten by one with fifteen from the last six months. Getting into a routine of asking is one of the highest-return habits available to a trade business.

Yes, but probably not all of it at once and probably not all of it forever. Covering a wide area means competing in a lot of local markets simultaneously, and spreading thin usually means ranking nowhere. We normally start with the areas where you already do the most work, because you have jobs and reviews there to build on, then expand outward once those are holding. After a few months the data usually shows that some areas produce good work and others produce price shoppers and long drives, which is worth knowing before you keep paying to be visible in them.
