SEO for Accountants

Be Found in the Weeks When People Actually Change Accountant

Accountancy has the most predictable search calendar of any profession we work with. The January self assessment rush, the run up to company year ends, the Budget, and now the quarterly rhythm that Making Tax Digital has imposed on hundreds of thousands of sole traders and landlords. Businesses do not idly wonder about changing accountant. They do it in specific windows, usually just after something went wrong or a deadline got uncomfortable, and they start by searching. Our work is about being the firm that is visible in those windows, with pages that answer the question being asked rather than describing your services.

Free SEO Audit

Deadline-Led Content and Niche Pages, Not a Services List

Most accountancy websites are a list of services: audit, payroll, VAT, corporation tax, bookkeeping. Every firm has the same list, written in much the same way, and none of it matches how clients search. A contractor does not search for “corporation tax services”. They search for whether they should be a limited company, what they can claim, and whether their current accountant should have told them something. The firms winning organic search in this sector are the ones answering those questions in public.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began on 6 April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000, extends to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. That is a rolling three year window in which several hundred thousand people who have never needed an accountant will start looking for one, and most will start by searching for what they are now required to do. It is the single largest content opportunity this profession has had in years, and most firms have published one blog post about it.

Digital Dominance Delivered: VKNG Digital

We are not applying a generic professional services template with the word “accountant” dropped in. We understand the difference between compliance work and advisory work and why the second is what you actually want more of, why the January peak is both an opportunity and the worst possible time to launch anything, how the Xero and QuickBooks partner directories function as a lead source in their own right, and why “accountants for contractors” is a better page to build than “tax services”.

SEO Services for Accountants

The Compliance Calendar as a Content Engine

Making Tax Digital, While It Is Still a Question

MTD for Income Tax is live for the highest threshold and rolling down to £20,000 by April 2028. Every stage brings a new population of sole traders and landlords searching for what it means for them. Content published now, kept current, and structured around the actual questions rather than the legislation, will earn traffic and links across the whole three year window.

The January Peak, Planned in September

Self assessment searches build from November and peak in the last ten days of January. Ranking in that window means publishing and earning links months earlier, because nothing you write in the second week of January will rank in the fourth. We work the calendar backwards from the deadline rather than reacting to it.

Budget and Fiscal Event Commentary

Journalists need qualified tax comment on the day, and the supply of accountants who will answer an email within two hours in plain English is short. This is the most reliable link earning route available to an accountancy firm, and it runs to a schedule you can put in a diary.

Year End and Sector Deadlines

Company year ends, payroll year end, VAT quarters, P11D, CIS. Predictable, searched, and mostly answered online by HMRC guidance that nobody enjoys reading. There is room for a firm that explains it better.

Niche and Sector Specialisation Pages

This Profession Has the Most Niche Demand of Any We Work In

“Accountants for contractors”, “accountants for landlords”, “accountants for dentists”, “accountants for ecommerce sellers”. These carry real volume, far less competition than the generic term, and considerably higher intent, because someone searching that way has already decided they want a specialist.

Choosing Niches You Can Actually Serve

The temptation is to build a page for every sector. The better approach is three or four you genuinely have clients and case studies in, because a niche page with no evidence behind it converts badly and reads as a landing page. We size the demand and then ask what you can actually stand behind.

Fee Structure and Packaged Pricing Pages

Fixed fee and packaged accountancy is now normal, and “how much does an accountant cost” is a high intent search that most firms refuse to answer. Publishing indicative pricing filters out the wrong enquiries before they reach you and ranks for a question competitors are ducking.

Software and Migration Pages

“Xero accountants”, “moving from Sage to Xero”, “QuickBooks setup”. Software is now part of how clients choose a firm, and these searches are commercial rather than informational.

Local SEO and the Partner Directories

Google Business Profile for a Professional Firm

“Accountants near me” and “accountant [town]” resolve in the map pack. Categories, services, hours, photographs and Q&A are ranking inputs, and most firms complete the profile once and never return to it.

The Software Partner Directories Are a Channel, Not a Badge

The Xero advisor directory and the QuickBooks ProAdvisor listings send genuine enquiries, and they rank for searches your own site struggles with. Most firms have a thin listing with no specialisms, no description and no reviews. Completing them properly is one of the fastest returns available in this sector and it costs nothing.

Professional Body Listings

ICAEW, ACCA, AAT and CIMA find-a-firm directories. High trust, relevant by definition, and routinely left half filled.

Multi Office and Locality Pages

Where a firm genuinely operates from several places, each office needs its own team, its own local content and its own reason to exist. Where it does not, one page does more than four thin ones.

Measurement: Recurring Fees, Not Enquiries

Enquiries by Service and Niche

A payroll enquiry and an advisory enquiry are different businesses. We report by organic landing page and service line so you can see which pages produce the work you actually want more of.

Recurring Fee Value, Not First Invoice

Accountancy relationships run for years. Measuring a new client against their first year fee undervalues the channel substantially, and it is the most common reason firms conclude SEO did not pay when it did.

Compliance to Advisory Conversion

The commercial goal for most firms is more advisory work at better margins. We track which organic entry points lead to advisory conversations rather than another self assessment client.

Cost Per Client Against Your Other Channels

Most firms acquire clients through referral, directories and paid search without ever comparing the cost of each. Putting organic alongside them is usually the moment the case makes itself.

VKNG Digital Accountancy SEO Process

Practice and Calendar Analysis

Establish which service lines you want more of, audit current visibility and technical health, map existing content against the compliance calendar, review directory and partner listings, and identify the niches you can genuinely evidence.

Content Calendar and Architecture

Plan backwards from the deadlines, map the MTD content programme across the threshold stages, decide the niche pages worth building, resolve overlap between existing service pages, and set up author profiles and credentials.

Implementation

Fix technical issues at template level, build niche and pricing pages, complete the software and professional body directories, optimise Google Business Profile, and begin the commentary programme ahead of the next fiscal event.

Fee Value and Advisory Mix

Track enquiries by service line, measure recurring fee value rather than first invoice, monitor advisory conversion, and direct effort toward the work with the margin.

Digital Dominance Delivered

The VKNG Digital Difference

We Work to Your Calendar, Not Ours

Nothing meaningful launches in January, and content aimed at the January peak has to exist by October. An agency that proposes a content programme starting in the new year has not understood the business it is pitching to.

Niche Pages With Evidence Behind Them

We would rather build three specialisation pages you have real clients in than twelve you do not. A niche page without a case study behind it converts badly and tends to attract exactly the enquiries you cannot service well.

Measured on Recurring Fees

A new client is worth their annual fee multiplied by the years they stay, not their first invoice. We report on that basis, because reporting on the other basis makes almost any acquisition channel look like a failure.

We Will Tell You When It Is a Directory Problem

Sometimes the fastest gain available to an accountancy firm is finishing its Xero listing, and that takes an afternoon rather than a retainer. We would rather say so and be trusted with the harder work afterwards.

You ask, we answer

Almost nobody wakes up wanting a new accountant. They change because a deadline was missed, a bill arrived without warning, a question went unanswered for three weeks, or the business grew into something their current firm cannot handle. That means the search happens at a moment of mild irritation and reasonably high urgency, and it happens in clusters: the weeks after January, the run up to a year end, and now every quarter for the businesses newly inside Making Tax Digital. Being visible in those windows is most of the work.

We work with practices from sole practitioners to multi partner firms, throughout Lancashire and nationwide. Before recommending anything we would want to know which service lines you actually want more of, because the SEO for a firm chasing volume compliance work and the SEO for a firm building an advisory practice pull in different directions, and doing both at once tends to produce a website that does neither well.

It is the work of making your firm visible when businesses and individuals search for the help you provide, whether that is “accountant for contractors”, “how much does an accountant cost” or “do I need to register for Making Tax Digital”. It covers your site’s technical health, the structure and depth of your service and niche pages, the content that answers what clients are actually asking, your listings in the software and professional body directories, and the local signals that decide who appears in the map pack.

Any time except January, and ideally around September. The January self assessment peak is the largest search window in your year, and ranking in it requires content published and links earned several months beforehand. Starting in November means competing for a window you have already missed. Starting in September means arriving in it prepared. Outside that, the second best time is whenever the next threshold stage of Making Tax Digital is about twelve months away.

Usually yes, and this profession has more genuine niche demand than any other we work in. “Accountants for landlords” and “accountants for dentists” are real searches with real intent and far less competition than the generic term. The discipline is in choosing three or four you can actually evidence with clients and case studies, rather than twenty you cannot. A specialisation page with nothing behind it reads exactly like what it is.

It is the largest content opportunity this profession has had in years. The Income Tax rollout began in April 2026 at £50,000 of qualifying income, drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. Each stage pulls in a new population of sole traders and landlords, many of whom have never used an accountant and will start by searching for what they are now obliged to do. Firms publishing genuinely clear guidance now will still be collecting the traffic in 2028.

Local and directory work can move within weeks, and finishing your Xero or ICAEW listings sometimes produces enquiries almost immediately. Content and niche pages typically show meaningful movement at three to six months. The complication specific to your profession is the calendar: results are not evenly distributed through the year, so judging progress in mid January against progress in mid August tells you very little. We report against the same period last year rather than the previous month.

Referrals are how most good firms grow and nothing here suggests otherwise. Two things are worth weighing. Referred clients search for you before they call, so what they find shapes whether the referral converts. And referral growth is capped by the size of your existing client base, which makes it a poor way to enter a new niche. Firms that want more advisory work, or want to move into a sector they have no clients in yet, generally cannot get there on referrals alone.
