Shopify SEO Agency

SEO for Shopify Stores

Shopify is a superb platform for selling and a constrained one for SEO, and most agencies treat it like any other site. It is not. Shopify decides your URL structure for you, generates duplicate paths for every product that sits in more than one collection, gives you limited control over what gets indexed, and quietly accumulates speed problems every time you install an app. None of that stops a Shopify store ranking. It does mean the work is different, and knowing which of Shopify’s limits can be worked around and which cannot is most of the job.

Rank a Shopify Store Without Fighting the Platform

Knowing where Shopify helps and where it quietly gets in the way is what separates useful work from generic advice. Collection pages are the biggest untapped asset on almost every Shopify store, and almost every theme buries their content below a product grid where it does nothing. Duplicate product URLs are generated automatically and handled badly by default. Apps that seemed harmless individually are collectively responsible for a Core Web Vitals score that will not improve until someone audits them. We fix these at theme and template level, so one change improves the whole catalogue rather than one page.

Digital Dominance Delivered: VKNG Digital

After nearly two decades running search for major eCommerce brands including Depop, Etsy, Missguided, Simply Be and Jacamo, we bring enterprise-level thinking to Shopify stores. That matters here because Shopify’s constraints bite hardest at scale, and because most Shopify SEO advice online is written for stores with forty products rather than four thousand.

Collection Page Optimisation

The Biggest Untapped Asset on Your Store

Collection pages carry the commercial intent and the broadest keyword coverage, and on most Shopify stores they are a product grid with sixty words underneath it, or nothing at all. We build them out with buying guidance, sizing help, comparisons and the information a shopper actually needs, placed so it serves them without pushing products below the fold.

Collection URL and Structure Decisions

Shopify forces /collections/ into your URLs and generates a second path for every product accessed through a collection. We make deliberate decisions about which collections deserve to exist, which should be merged, and how the structure maps to the terms you can realistically own.

Filters, Tags and Crawl Waste

Shopify’s tag filtering and most filter apps generate large numbers of near-duplicate URLs. Left alone they consume crawl budget and split ranking signals. We decide which filter combinations have genuine search demand and deserve indexing, and block the rest.

Pagination and Infinite Scroll

Many themes load products by infinite scroll, which looks good and hides most of your catalogue from search engines. We make sure the full catalogue is reachable and that paginated collections are handled properly.

Product URLs, Variants and Duplication

The Two-Path Problem

Every Shopify product is reachable at /products/name and at /collections/collection/products/name. That is duplication the platform creates for you, and default canonical handling does not always resolve it cleanly, particularly with themes that generate collection-scoped links throughout. We audit what is actually being indexed and fix the linking so signals consolidate.

Variant URLs

Colour, size and style variants generate parameter URLs that can be indexed, split signals and create thin near-duplicates in the index. We handle them so your strongest product URL ranks rather than five weak versions competing.

Product Copy at Scale

Manufacturer descriptions are duplicated across every store carrying the product. We restructure and rewrite so search engines have a reason to prefer your version, with templated patterns for the long tail and manual attention on your best sellers.

Out-of-Stock and Discontinued Products

Products end, and Shopify’s default handling is to leave them or delete them, neither of which passes on the authority they accumulated. We handle expired SKUs so the equity goes somewhere useful.

Speed, Apps and Theme Performance

App Bloat

Every app you install injects scripts, and the effect is cumulative and largely invisible until Core Web Vitals fails. We audit what each app costs you in load time, identify the ones doing nothing, and work out what can be replaced with theme code.

Theme and Liquid Optimisation

Image handling, lazy loading, render-blocking resources and unused CSS, addressed in the theme so the fix applies across every page rather than one at a time.

What Shopify Will and Will Not Let You Do

Some things are genuinely fixed by the platform and some only appear to be. Knowing the difference saves a lot of wasted effort, and we will tell you plainly when a recommendation you have been given elsewhere is not achievable on Shopify.

Schema and Rich Results

Product, Offer, Review, AggregateRating and Breadcrumb markup implemented properly through the theme, so listings carry price, stock and rating detail rather than being a plain blue link.

Content, Blogs and International

Working With Shopify’s Blog Structure

Shopify’s blog sits at /blogs/ with a rigid structure and limited taxonomy. It is workable but it constrains how content clusters can be organised, and we plan around it rather than pretending it behaves like WordPress.

Buying Guides and Comparison Content

The research-stage content shoppers read before they know which product they want, built to rank and structured to route readers into the collections that sell.

Shopify Markets and International

Multi-currency, multi-language and market-specific domains all raise hreflang and duplication questions, and Shopify’s implementation has its own quirks. We set it up so your markets do not compete with each other.

Migrating Themes Without Losing Rankings

Theme changes routinely break internal linking, schema and page structure without anyone noticing until traffic drops. We audit before and after so a redesign does not cost you six months.

VKNG Digital Shopify SEO Process

Crawl and Platform Audit

Crawl the full store, identify what is actually indexed versus what exists, audit app load impact, review collection structure and theme output, and establish where Shopify’s defaults are working against you.

Structure and Keyword Mapping

Map collections, products and content to the terms they can own. Decide the filter and variant indexing rules. Plan the collection content that will carry the commercial rankings.

Implementation

Fix at theme level, rebuild collection content, resolve duplication, address app and speed issues, deploy schema, and publish supporting content.

Scale & Expand

Double down on collections that move, expand keyword coverage, build seasonal authority, and revisit the harder head terms once authority supports them.

Digital Dominance Delivered

The VKNG Digital Difference

We Know the Platform's Limits

Which of Shopify’s constraints can be worked around, which cannot, and which only look like constraints. That knowledge saves months of effort aimed at things that were never going to work.

Collection Pages First

The highest-value pages on a Shopify store are the ones most stores neglect entirely. That is where we start.

Theme-Level Fixes

We fix the template, not the page. One change that improves four thousand product pages beats four thousand individual edits, and it is the only approach that scales on a real catalogue.

Enterprise Experience on a Shopify Store

Depop, Etsy, Missguided, Simply Be, Jacamo. Most Shopify SEO advice is written for small stores. We know what breaks at scale because we have had to fix it.

You ask, we answer

Most Shopify stores that are not ranking have already tried. The theme was chosen partly on speed, an SEO app is installed, the product descriptions have been rewritten at least once, and a blog was started and quietly abandoned. The problem is rarely effort. It is that Shopify’s real constraints, collection page structure, duplicate product paths and accumulated app weight, sit underneath the level most advice operates at, and no amount of rewriting product copy touches any of them. Meanwhile every month without organic visibility is another month paying for traffic you could have owned.

We work with Shopify stores from a few hundred products to several thousand, on Basic through to Plus, with retailers throughout Lancashire and nationwide. Shopify SEO is not a local service and we will not pretend otherwise: the platform behaves the same in Preston as it does in London. What genuinely varies is catalogue size, because that determines how much of what follows actually applies to you. If you sell forty products, some of it will not.

No, and the idea that it is comes mostly from people comparing it to a fully custom build. Shopify ranks perfectly well. It is more constrained than WordPress, particularly around URL structure and what you can control at server level, but those constraints are workable and most Shopify stores are held back by things that have nothing to do with the platform: empty collection pages, duplicate manufacturer copy, twelve apps nobody audits. Fix those and the platform is rarely the limiting factor.

Because Shopify generates one. Every product is reachable directly at /products/name and again at /collections/collection-name/products/name when someone arrives through a collection. Shopify sets a canonical to handle it, but plenty of themes generate collection-scoped links throughout the site anyway, which sends mixed signals. It is one of the first things we check and one of the more common problems we find.

Usually more than expected, and the effect is cumulative rather than obvious. Every app injects scripts that load on pages they have nothing to do with. We measure the load cost of each one, which usually turns up two or three that are doing nothing useful and one that is doing real damage. It is often the fastest meaningful speed improvement available on a Shopify store.

Almost certainly not, and we would tell you if we thought otherwise. Replatforming is expensive, risky and takes months during which your rankings are exposed. The situations where it is genuinely justified are rare and usually about commercial requirements rather than SEO. If someone is telling you to leave Shopify for SEO reasons alone, be sceptical.

Technical and collection page work can move things within weeks, particularly if the store has never had the basics done. Meaningful growth across the catalogue typically takes three to six months. Competitive head terms take longer because they need links. The stores that move fastest are usually the ones where nobody has touched the collection pages, because that is a large amount of value sitting unused.

Yes, and Plus is where this gets more interesting, because you get scripts, checkout control and more flexibility on international setups. The trade-off is that larger catalogues make every structural problem bigger. The work is the same in principle and considerably higher stakes in practice.
